"Incantation holds many mysteries. The brilliant violinist Virgil Boutellis-Taft strips away the veil of its secret powers, the ones that lie inside his violin’s fascinating chant.

Sometimes violent and fiery, as in Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre, sometimes tender, as in Tchaikovsky and Bruch, incantation is indeed deeply rooted in musical history, from the baroque era, with Vitali’s Chaconne, to the ‘Yumeji’s Theme’, part of the soundtrack of the film In the Mood for Love. Over and over, it kept inspiring many composers their most captivating works.

Virgil Boutellis-Taft and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, under’s Jac Van Steen direction, show remarkable eloquence in this magical recording: one can only fall under these spells."


"L’incantation recèle bien des mystères : répétée, scandée, susurrée, elle mène à la transe, charme, envoûte, voire ensorcelle. Le violoniste Virgil Boutellis-Taft se propose ici de lever le voile sur ses pouvoirs secrets, ceux-là mêmes qui résident dans le chant fascinant de son instrument.

Tantôt violente et fiévreuse, comme dans la Danse macabre de Camille Saint-Saëns, tantôt caressante et ondoyante, chez Bruch ou Tchaïkovski, l’incantation traverse toute l’histoire, de l’époque baroque (avec la mystérieuse Chaconne de Vitali) au fleuron du cinéma, avec le « Thème de Yumeji », tiré du film In the Mood for Love. Religieuse, vengeresse, magique voire maléfique, elle n’eut de cesse d’inspirer aux compositeurs leurs œuvres les plus magnétiques.
